OTHER WORK
We re-examine history as recorded in newspapers — with the context available today. We’re also:
Mapping Mecklenburg land and who held — and holds — it. For the Remembrance Project, we used deeds, wills, maps and genealogical records to identify the land where Willie McDaniel’s body was found after he was lynched, and what happened to the land afterward.
Helping to surface names of people who were enslaved and where they might have lived then. For “A Binding Truth,” we identified the locations of Mecklenburg plantations and what’s on them today. In other work, we’re documenting names of enslaved and enslavers.
Assisting families’ research, via deeds, wills, court rulings, newspaper stories and other documents. For the Remembrance Project, we found connections from the men killed to current Charlotte residents.
Gathering good stories.
